High School Highlights
John W. North High School’s senior wrestler, Coby Merrill, clinched his second state title at the 2026 CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield. Merrill dominated the heavyweight bracket, securing four victories by pins, including a swift 37-second pin in the championship match against Clovis High School’s Andrew Arroyo. This accomplishment marks him as the first two-time state wrestling and three-time CIF Southern Section Masters champion in Riverside Unified’s history.
In swimming, Riverside Polytechnic High School’s senior twins, Ava and Dash DeAnda, are making waves. Both appeared on the Inland Sports Show to discuss their preparations for the upcoming 2026 CIF Southern Section and State Swimming & Diving Championships. Ava is set to continue her swimming career at the University of California, Berkeley, while Dash will join the University of California, San Diego.
College Sports Update
UC Riverside welcomed Greg Paules as the new director of intercollegiate athletics. Paules, previously the senior associate athletics director at Cal State Fullerton, expressed his enthusiasm for the potential of Highlander athletics and its role in strengthening the community.
Riverside City College’s football team, under new head coach Kevin Craft, opened the 2025 season ranked No. 3 in the 3C2A. The Tigers began their campaign hosting No. 18-ranked Long Beach City College at Wheelock Stadium.
