Riverside’s Commitment to Sustainability: A Community Effort

Riverside, California, is actively pursuing sustainability through a variety of community initiatives and environmental programs. The city’s Office of Sustainability leads efforts to reduce the ecological footprint and enhance residents’ quality of life. Key initiatives include promoting renewable energy adoption, fostering sustainable transportation solutions, and aiming for community-wide carbon neutrality by 2040.

Community Engagement and Environmental Stewardship

Community organizations play a vital role in Riverside’s sustainability efforts. The ‘Love Your Neighborhood’ program, for instance, is a stormwater pollution prevention initiative that encourages local cleanup events to reduce litter and pollutants in neighborhoods. This program spans across 27 cities and three watersheds, aiming to increase pollution awareness and its impact on the environment.

Renewable Energy and Water Conservation

Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) is committed to providing efficient and reliable services while meeting the state’s decarbonization goals. As of 2023, RPU’s power content shows 46.4% of its energy supply coming from renewable sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal. Additionally, RPU offers an option for residents and commercial customers to elect to receive 100% renewable energy.

Water conservation is another critical focus. The city receives its water from local groundwater basins, which take several wet years to recover. Despite an unusually wet rainy season pulling most of California out of a severe drought, climate change has made the state’s dry and wet spells more extreme and unpredictable. Therefore, water use efficiency and conservation remain important for all Californians.

Climate Action and Adaptation Plan

The City of Riverside is developing a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) to determine overarching sustainability and environmental stewardship goals. This plan will establish greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and identify strategies to meet these targets. Community outreach efforts are integral to this process, ensuring that the plan reflects the priorities of Riverside residents.

Get Involved

Residents are encouraged to participate in sustainability efforts by joining local environmental clubs, volunteering for community cleanup events, and adopting water and energy conservation practices at home. By working together, Riverside can continue to build a greener, more resilient future for all.
